In addition to writing workshops, Cedar Tree, Inc. operates several ongoing projects within the community: internships, publishing opportunities, scholarships, book drives and donations.
Internships
Cedar Tree, Inc. hires ex-offenders whose lives exemplify the kind of transformation that Cedar Tree, Inc. promotes. Interns help facilitate writing workshops, learn documentary film production, and aspects of running a non-profit organization.
Publishing Opportunities
Talented workshop participants and interns serious about writing receive guidance and help with publishing their work. A Cedar Tree, Inc. intern recently published two books of poetry. Another Cedar Tree, Inc. graduate has written a manuscript currently ready for publishing.
Scholarships
Cedar Tree, Inc. awards scholarships to promising students who participate in writing workshops . In 2007, five Cedar Tree, Inc. workshop graduates from Ogden, Utah, received scholarships to Weber State University.
Book Drives and Donations
Cedar Tree, Inc. collects and donates books to prison libraries, under-funded schools and deprived communities. For example, hundreds of books were donated to the New Futures High School library in Spring 2008. In addition, all writing and reading materials are provided to workshop participants at no cost.
