Mission Statement

Cedar Tree, Inc. transforms lives through reading and writing. We conduct literary workshops in prisons, detention centers, community centers, and schools for at-risk youth. Our mission is to offer under-served communities the tools to overcome obstacles to learning. Drawing on participants' life-based experiences, Cedar Tree, Inc. workshops change lives forever.

Environmental Literacy Project

The 6,500-acre Wind River Ranch, located in Northern New Mexico near the village of Mora, provides the perfect setting for Cedar Tree, Inc.’s environmental literacy workshops. These workshops are designed to address our planet's fragile ecosystems and the individual's role in helping preserve the environment. Workshop participants are given the opportunity to examine the relationship between environmental degradation, human consciousness and the reciprocal awareness that lends itself to either vitality or disease.

Cedar Tree, Inc. writing workshops at Wind River blend nature, art, and writing with the ultimate outdoor learning experience. The workshops are available to individuals who may lack access to nature, including adults, middle school and high school students. The workshops are organized as follows. Mornings commence with reintroducing native plants to the ranch and creating habitats for wildlife. Afternoon workshops give participants an opportunity to write about their experiences in nature. Evenings are spent with the group sharing and discussing their writing.

The workshops are the subject of the upcoming documentary, Wind River Ranch. Click here to see excerpts from the film.
